BIKE RECEIPT

NEVER RISK BUYING A STOLEN BIKE AGAIN

The BIKE RECEIPT isn't that much different to a regular receipt, however it will help reduce the number of stolen bikes being sold in Cambridgeshire by capturing vital information. Here's how;

  • The receipt prompts a buyer to locate and check the serial/frame number of the bike on bikeregister.com

  • If unregistered and you wish to proceed with the sale, you are asked to fill in the serial number, make, model AND the sellers details on the receipt.  We now have a trail. A legitimate seller would have no problem signing their name to it but you can bet your bottom dollar, a fraudulent seller will be very reluctant to do this.

  • If registered, then the seller will have to 'transfer ownership' to the buyer (just as you would with a car) which bikeregister have made extremely easy to do.

  • In any case, the bike serial number is now being recorded on all second hand bike sales which is a huge step towards tackling bike theft.

IMPORTANT:  When purchasing a second hand bike, you have a responsibility to check that it is not stolen.  If it turns out you have bought a stolen bike and the original owner can be traced, you will be forced to give the bike back and it will be a long and complicated process to try and get your money back from the thief.

ABOUT US

What started out as a small Facebook group in Cambridge just three years ago, this has grown into a thriving community group page that's caught the attention of local and national media.  Collectively, we have reunited in excess of 450 victims with their stolen bikes by working together as a community.  However, our success rate would have been far higher if people were aware of their bikes 'frame/serial numbers'. Sadly, most people would only come to learn the existence of this, after their theft had taken place.  This is something that we would like to change.  Flagging a bike as 'stolen' on BikeRegister, makes it extremely difficult for any thief to sell on.

Since the start of lockdown, bike sales have increased by 60% whch has also led to a sharp rise in cycle thefts. Insurance companies are reporting a whopping 125% increase in claims within the last 3 months alone.  We estimate that a third of these, are stolen. And we now know just how to fix this.

Support Us

There is no greater reward than reuniting a stolen bike with it's rightful owner.  Over the past 36 months since setting up this page, we have spent countless hours investigating thefts, checking all selling platforms for suspicious listings, liaising with sellers gathering credible intel for victims to follow up with the police - and so much more. All of this takes a great deal of time and energy, but we are pleased to confirm that we have helped reunite in excess of 450 stolen bikes since launching a community page on Facebook.  Do please check it out.

This will always remain completely voluntary. However, it comes as a cost and we do not get any funding to do this - it all comes out of our own pockets.

We would like to share our progress with you.

This initiative is being trialled in Cambridge, but our ultimate goal is to have ALL bikes (nationwide) registered on Bikeregister.com

We can do this!
